James
Robert Hewitt and Margaret June Barker were married on December 11, 1938 in Los
Angeles, California. They went on a camping trip for their honeymoon and this
photo
was taken when they returned.
The location is a one-room home on Stingle Ave. in what was then known as Garvey,
California. It was a dead end street off Garvey Ave. and was a few miles west of
El Monte. My dad and his brothers use to repair their cars under the pepper tree in
the background. They used block and tackle on a limb to remove the engines from
their cars for repair.
The building in the left background is a garage build by Harold Mapes and his
wife and daughter. They lived in the garage while constructing their home. The
street was named after George Stingle who sold the property on that street and
also lived on the street in a large home. This neighborhood was located between
El Monte and Rosemead.
My grandfather built the house that is to the right in the photo and it was one
big room with a small kitchen and small bath. They put all the beds in the one
big room and it accommodated, my grandfather, uncle Fred, my dad and uncle
Harry. My dad and uncle Harry went to El Monte high school from there and they
all helped my grandfather build homes at that time.
My grandmother was a stage mother and always on the road caring for my aunt
June's two children. My aunt June was in show business as an acrobatic dancer on
Broadway in New York.
My uncles
Fred, Harry and Sam Hewitt spent many hours of hard work documenting their past
for the benefit of this page I am grateful to them for their fine work. It is in
Memory of my late uncle Harry that I will dedicate this page. My cousin. Charles
"Chuck" Hewitt researched and contributed much of the history compiled and
recorded on these pages.
Finally let me acknowledge Evelyn Hewett the great work in her
book "William Hewett (Hewitt) 1749-1826 and His Descendents A Genealogy
Compiled by Evelyn Hewett" Published in 1992.

Centered in this photo is my
grandfather Clifford Leroy Hewitt (White shirt & Tie) and grandmother Leslie May
(McFarland) Hewitt (to the left of grandfather). Surrounding them at the
time were all their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Taken in
about 1960 while I was serving my country in the far-east as a young
Marine. I think I was the only one absent.
