Ada Barker (Daughter) was born on October 4, 1876 in Fort Griffin, Shackelford County, Texas. She died on May 19, 1882 at Fort Griffin.

Ida Mae Barker (Daughter) was born in Shackelford County, Texas on October 13, 1878. She married Henry Holman Vaughn on October 12, 1898.  Henry Vaughn was the son of Daniel H. and Sarah Savilla Vaughn.  He was born on August 18, 1874 at Timpton, Shelby County, Texas.

Henry Holman Vaughn first appears on the 1880 Shelby County, Texas Federal census with his father mother and two younger brothers Dannie L. Vaughn and James H. Vaughn. His father’s occupation was recorded as a farmer. Henry’s age is recorded as 6 years old.  Henry moved to the Texas panhandle country in 1885 at the age of 11 years old. with his family. He was the oldest of 13 children. They were Tammie Ruth, Dannie Leak, James Hezekieh, Nannie Lou, Pricie Jane, Sallie Fannie, George Preston, Cora, Bessie, Foy, Doc and Sam Zone Vaughn.

Henry and Ida May are on the June 1900 Wheeler County Federal census as residents of Mobeetie with their 10-month-old son Joseph Owen Vaughn. Henry listed his occupation as a farm Labor.  In 1910 we find them living in Wheeler, Wheeler County, Texas.  It was later reported that they had moved to Shamrock, Wheeler County, Texas and that she had a brother living there who "drove a dray for the Cicero Smith Lumber Company". This would have been my grandfather Joseph Owen Barker. This report was not accurate however, as Henry and Ida were by this time living in Harold Township, Wilbarger County, Texas and Henry was the manager of the Cicero Smith Lumber Company located in Harold. Henry worked for Cicero Smith for over 20 years as the manager and bookkeeper until he retired. This is verifiable by both the 1920 and 1930 Wilbarger County Federal census and the obituary for Henry in the March 22, 1939 issue of the Vernon Daily Record.

Henry and Ida had four Daughters, Ida Mae Vaughn, Mattie Ina Vaughn, Cora Lottie (Dollye) Vaughn and  Dorothy Holman Vaughn. They had five sons, Joseph Owen Vaughn, James H. Vaughn, David Henry Vaughn Jr., B. A. ( Bernie) Vaughn and Tom A. Vaughn.  Ida Mae Barker Vaughn died on April 21, 1922 due to complications during the birth of her youngest child Tom A. Vaughn. She is buried in Harold, Wilbarger County, Texas in the remote Vaughn Family plot. Subsequent to Ida's death Henry Vaughn married Winnie Dane a native of Mississippi on November 24, 1928. The 1930 census shows them living in Harold Township with Henry"s children, Cora Lottie (Dollye), B. A. (Bernie), Dorothy and Tom A. Vaughn. They moved to nearby Vernon after he retired where they remained until Henry suffered a hart attack and died suddenly in March 1939 at the age of 64. from the nine children Henry and Ida only had two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Joseph Owen Vaughn (Grandson) born on July 27, 1899 in Mobeetie. He  was 11 months and 23 days old when he died on July 20, 1900.

James Henry Vaughn (Grandson) was born on September 6, about 1903. He served during WWI as a PFC in the Quartermaster Corps in the 8th Bakery Company. When he returned home he suffered from the side effects of exposure to mustard gas.  He died on  July 26, 1922. he never married and had no children.

Ida Maye Vaughn (Granddaughter) was born on March 3, 1905. When her mother died in 1921 the state were threatening to separate the children in the family so she left home and moved to Ventura California. Although she married several times she never had children. The last name of her last husband was Strandgaard. Ida Maye died in Ventura on November 7, 1971.

Mattie Ina Vaughn (Granddaughter)  was born on January 21, 1908 and she died on July 22, 1908.

David Henry Vaughn Jr. (Grandson) was born on February 24, 1910. He died on July 4, 1910.

Cora Lottie Vaughn ( Granddaughter) was Born on November 6, 1911. Her father Henry Vaughn affectionately called her "Dolly-Bug" and she soon adopted the name "Dollye" . and that was the name she went by. Even her husband and son never knew her correct name until her death. When her mother died Dollye left school to care for her newborn brother Tom for about a year. Then she retuned to school and finished. After completing school she left home to join her sister Ida Maye in California. She met and married Arnold Gardner and they moved back to Pecos, Reeves County, Texas to join her brother Bernie and sister Dorothy. Cora Lottie Vaughn died on September 23, 1994 in Paradise Valley Arizona. Dollye had one son and two grandsons all of whom are still living.

B. A. Vaughn (Grandson) Was born on December 10, 1914. When he finished school he also left home and moved to Ventura California to join his sisters. when  WWII  broke out he joined the United States Army Air Corps as an aircraft Mechanic. He married Mary Francis Russell in Ventura. She was from Kansas. When he returned home from the War he decided to move to Pecos, Reeves County,  Texas to work for his brother in law Henry Reeves who was his little sister Dorothy's husband. Henry had moved there and opened up a business.

Bernie's birth record in the family bible records his name as simply B. A. Vaughn. However, he went by the name Bernie. Other legal documents record his name as Bernice Austin Vaughn. The family story is that he always went by Bernie and when he went into the service they asked him what the initial "A" stood for and he just picked out Austin. Bernie died on July 6, 1990. Bernie had one daughter and one granddaughter both of whom are still living.

Dorothy Holman Vaughn (Granddaughter) was born on December 25, 1916. (She shares the same birth day as her grandfather David Henry Barker.) When she finished school she also followed her sisters and brother to Ventura, California where she married Henry Reeves. Henry was in construction and he decided to move back to Texas where he bought a small railroad and gravel pit as well as a small motor court (Motel). Dorothy died in Pecos on July 6, 1990. Dorothy never had any children.

Tom A. Vaughn (Grandson) was born on April 23, 1912 and his mother Ida May Barker Vaughn died giving birth to him.  Tom died on November 8, 1937 at the age of 16.

Joseph Owen BARKER (Son) was born in Shackelford County, Texas on May 6, 1881. He was always known as Owen. After the death of His mother Charlotte and father David, Joseph Owen Barker was sent to live with his uncle Joseph P. Barker in Gray County, Texas on a farm. They were listed on the 1900 Gray County census, Joseph P  as a "farmer" and nephew Joseph Owen as a "Ranch Laborer". Joseph's uncle Joseph P. Barker is on the 1910 Floyd County, Texas census as a Partner to Joe Heafner on a farm.

Joseph Owen Barker Left his Uncle Joseph P. Barker sometime after the 1900 census. He Married Adie Belle Mason on December 22, 1903 in Mobeetie, Wheeler County, Texas. (It is not known if there were any children from this union.) In 1910 Joseph was living in the home of Fadwick Collingsworth on Arkansas Street in Wheeler, Wheeler County, Texas as a single man. Mr. Collingsworth listed his occupation as a "Drayman" ( Driver of carts or wagons) and Joseph Owen listed his occupation as a "Hired Hand". ( Presumably working as an assistant to Mr. Collingsworth) Joseph later moved down to Harold, Wilbarger County, Texas, where his sister and brother in law, Ida Mae and Henry Holman Vaughn Lived. As the manager of the Cicero Smith Lumber Company, Henry was able to employ Joseph as a Drayman.  Joseph's wife Addie Belle must have  died sometime before 1910 as she did not appear on the 1910 census with Joseph, and he later stated that he was a widower on his second marriage license in 1915.

In 1912 Joseph Owen's  uncle Thomas Barker from Weatherford, Parker County, Texas and family moved to Douglas, Arizona. This town is located about 30 miles from the old copper mining town of Bisbee Arizona. Douglas was established as the smelting center for the Bisbee copper mines and rail head for shipment of their product. Joseph Owen Barker joined Thomas' family some time before 1914 and ended up working for the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Corporation in Bisbee in 1914 and 1915, as a "mucker". ( per Copper Queen Mines pay roll records)

imageLG1.JPG (12609 bytes)His second marriage was to Leora Claire Easton on October 4, 1915 in Los Angeles Calif. They had seven children, Jacey, Chester Lyndon, Warren Proctor, Margaret June, Sibyl Ruth, Roy Alfred and Kenneth Ray. image6AS.JPG (14043 bytes) Joseph met Leora in Bisbee, Arizona. Leora's father, Milton Easton worked for Bisbee Fuel and Feed Co., as a Yardman and Driver. Leora's mother Ida was deceased. After they were married they moved to Shamrock,  Wheeler County, Texas where their first child Jacey (Jack) Barker was born on July 16, 1916. They returned to Los Angeles California a short while later where their second child Chester Lyndon Barker was born on March 3, 1918. When Joseph and Leora returned to California, Joseph was employed as a labor in the ship yards at San Pedro working with his brother in Law James Roach who was married to Leora's sister Ellen. He later took a Job with the Forrest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California where he remained employed as a Labor until his death in 1945. This writer is his grand son. He passed away in April 1945 and was buried on my 5th birthday. Just prior to his death, he requested that the hospital allow one last visit with me. Theimage9TJ.JPG (9634 bytes) hospital made an exception to the rule against visits by children under 16 years of age. I was allowed one last visit. During the visit. Grandpa could not eat anything, except that he could suck on those little hard candies called lemon drops. He had a bag of them on the table next to the bed and I climbed on to his bed and began to eat his candy. My mother scolded me for eating grandpa's candy and he told her to leave me alone as it was all right for me to eat them. This writer is now 61 years old and I still remember grandpa telling me that I should always be a good boy because he would be watching me from heaven. He went on to be with the Lord a few days later. Since then, every time I've got into trouble I have looked up and thought about my grandpa.

Jacey ( Jack ) BARKER (Grandson) never married and had no children. He lived with his mother Leora in South Pasadena, California until his death in 1974. He was a professional gardener and made a comfortable living for himself and Grandma.

In conversations with uncle Jack before his death, this writer learned that Uncle Jack had a girlfriend that he was very much in love with when he was a young man. She was a devout Catholic. Her parents would not allow them to wed, as they did not want her to marry outside her faith. Jack was so much in love with this girl that he could never marry anyone else.

imageRBG.JPG (9078 bytes)Uncle Jack served Honorably in the United States Army during the second world war in North Africa. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and was a combat veteran. I had the Honor of participating in his funeral as a pall barrier when he was laid to rest at the National Cemetery in Westwood, California.

imageNMR.JPG (11197 bytes)Chester ( Chet ) Barker (Grandson) Chet was married to Jackqueline Marie Pessa. They had three Daughters and one son. He married second Olivia and they had one daughter. As a boy, uncle Chet joined a Carnival show. This became a lifetime career. He became a part owner of a carnival known as Fair Times Shows and he played all the major fairs on the west coast including most of the State Fairs. I often visited him at the Del Mar. Pomona County Fairs and the California State Fair in Sacramento.

Warren Proctor Barker (Grandson) Born January 1, 1920 he died as a small child.

imageb27.jpg (12912 bytes)Margaret June BARKER (Granddaughter and writers mother ) married James Robert Hewitt on December 11, 1938 in Los Angeles California. She died on November 6, 1987 in Santa Maria California. They had two boys and five daughters. James was born on August 21, 1918 in Oakland. He died in Santa Maria, California on November 26, 1996.

imageTRG.JPG (10112 bytes)James honorably served in the United States Army Air Corps during the second world war. He was an accomplished B-17 and B-29 pilot. and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He completed his flight training on the B-29 just prior to the end of the war and never had to see combat. I was about 4 years old when Dad snuck me on board his B-17. It scared me half to death. A few years before his death, I took dad to an air show to see one of the last operating B-17’s. As we made the tour dad reminisced about taking me on his B-17 so I know my memory was accurate. He was also an accomplished Landscape Artiest. He sold many wonderful paintings to many collectors. He studied under Robert Wood and was able to master Roberts style. Some of his paintings sold for as much as $6000.00.

Sibyl Ruth BARKER (Granddaughter) was first married to Donald Lester Martin. They had one son, David Lester Martin. She married second Harvey Blacketer. While Harvey was in the service one child was born out side the marriage. A central California family adopted her. Between them, Harvey and Sibyl had 12 additional children.

Harvey served in the United States Army during the early part of W.W.II and was discharged due to tuberculosis. Subsequently, Harvey was seriously injured in the 1940’s when he and his brother picked up a hitchhiker who shot them. This incident compounded his disability which resulted in a permanent disability and he was never able to maintain meaningful employment.

Roy Alfred BARKER (Grandson) Was married twice. His first wife's name was Joan and they had a son Johnny who passed away at about age 5. His second wife's name is Elaine and they have no children.

imageOEJ.JPG (9356 bytes)Roy lied about his age in 1944 and joined the Maritime service. He graduated from the Maritime Academy in Dec. 1944. He was assigned to the Army Transport service in the Pacific. His ship was the USS Casa Grande, a troop transport. His ship was used to transport troops in the Guam, New Guinea, Caudal Canal and Eniwetok campaigns. In 1945 he also served in England. Roy Had a successful career as an Aircraft Mechanic for the Lockheed Corporation in Burbank California where he retired. He was also a Union Local President for the International Association of Machinists.

Kenneth Ray BARKER (Grandson) Has been married twice and his current wife's name is Marianne. I do not believe he had any children. He served Honorably in the United States Army during the Korean war and is a combat veteran. As a boy during the Korean war, I used to go to the war surplus store and buy out dated military items and send them to uncle Kenny in Korea. He must have thought I was nuts. Kenny was also an Aircraft Mechanic and was employed by the Boeing Company in Washington State.

imageSRK.JPG (15613 bytes)David Henry BARKER Jr. (Son) was born on Feb. 27, 1883 in Shackelford County, Texas. Upon the death of his father David Henry Barker, Henry was sent to live with James Jasper Barker and his wife Annie in Weatherford, Parker County, Texas. During the process his first and middle names were reversed and he became known as Henry David. James and Annie Barker  had 12 children. Henry did not fit in well with them so he ran away on several occasions. At the age of ten he ran away and got on a train. He ended up in White Rock Lake, Dallas County, Texas. An old man and his spinster daughter took Henry in and raised him. When he completed his schooling, he was married to Lucille Donahey on December 21, 1905 in Dallas Texas. The people that raised him, set Henry up with some farm land near Dennison, Texas and he started a dairy farm. He died on Dec. 22 1958 in Dennison, Texas. His wife Lucille died in 1964 in Dennison, Texas. Henry and Lucille had three sons, Forrest D. Barker born 1905 died 1919 in Dennison, Texas. Jack H. Barker born in 1906 and Joseph Bailey Barker Born 1908 in Richardson Texas died in 1986 In Lubbock, Texas.

Henry Barker and his two sons, Jack and Joe Operated a Dairy business Known as "Barker's Dairy and Creamery" in Sherman and Dennison Texas from 1951 through 1957. They formed a corporation with Henry as the President, Jack as the Vice President and Joe as the Secretary & Treasure.

Jack H. Barker (Grandson) married Edna E. Barker and they had two Children and three grand children. They were last known to live in Paris, Texas.

Joe B. BARKER (Grandson) Married Margie (Shaffer) Barker March 25, 1933 in Durant, Texas. They moved to Lubbock Texas in 1954 where they established the "White Pig" Restaurant. They were members of the Highland Baptist Church. (Today February 24, 2003 Margie's son in law Truman McKillip gave me the sad news that Margie passed away on February 22, 2003.) Joe and Margie had one daughter, Mary Ellen (Barker) McKillip. She married Truman McKillip and they had three children, Charlotte Ann, Diane Elizabeth and John David McKillip. Mary Ellen died in 1994 in Dennison, Texas. Charlotte died on Oct. 16, 1962.

Charlie Alexander BARKER (Son) was born in Tascosa, Oldham County, Texas on July 30, 1987. His mother died 12 days after his birth. He indicated on his social Security application that his father was David Barker and his mother's maiden name was Emma Windson and he was born in Shamrock Wheeler County Texas. The presumption here is that after his mothers death his father David Henry Barker either married Emma Windson or the Windson family took Charlie in and adopted him (Still being investigated and is not verified).

Charlie Barker married Flora Mabra daughter of William Mabra and Adrella Nix in Busch, Roger Mills County, OK. on January 28,1907. The marriage license was issued in Cheyenne Ok. and states that Charlie was 19 years old and his parents were deceased. He stated that he had no guardian and was from Busch, OK. Flora stated she was from Merritt OK., which is now in Beckham County, Ok..  Cheyenne is in Roger Mills County, OK. and borders Wheeler County, Texas at the northeast corner. The town of Busch was later renamed Elk City and is located in the northern most section of Beckham County Ok.  Merritt is only a spot on the road just south west of Elk City and only a schoolhouse remains there.

The witnesses who signed the marriage certificate were, W. H. Mabra of Merritt, J. W.  Suoddy, O. Smith and U. W. Russell. The Reverend J. W. Abbott, minister of the Presbyterian Church, married them.

Charlie and Flora had eight children and moved about often. Their migration pattern is difficult to follow. Their first two children were born in Oklahoma between 1907 and 1910, Dave Barker and William Henry Barker. A third child Clyde Russell Barker was born in Eaglesville, Modoc County, California in 1911 and a daughter Mae was born in Oklahoma in 1914. The four remaining children were born in Montana, Mary Barker, Donald Raymond Barker Della Barker and Harold Barker. Some time in 1923 Charlie deserted Flora and his children leaving them to fend for them selves in Butte Montana while he moved to Indian Town, Plumas County, California where he was employed by the Eangel Mining Company. Here He met and married married Elsie Loretta (Addington) St John. They had no children. However Elsie had a 14 year old daughter Mildred E. St John still living at home. Charlie died in Redding California on August 7, 1949 and is buried at the cemetery in Burney, California.

After Charlie left Flora she married John Allie a local  miner who was an immigrant born in Istanbul, Turkey. They had no children.

Dave Barker (Grandson) was born in Sayre, Beckham County, Oklahoma on December 22, 1907. At the time his father Charlie Barker left the family in Butte, Silver Bow County, Montana Dave was about 16 years old and he went to work at the Leonard Mine in Butte. Dave remained employed there until he was murdered on December 24, 1938. Dave was never married and was living with a group of men on East Mercury Street at the time he was shot. He was walking home from work along the railroad tracks carrying his lunch box under his arm when he was shot with a .38 caliber handgun. He was shot twice with one wound in the head and the other went through his arm and pieced his side. His killer or killers were never found.

William Henry Barker (Grandson) was born in Oklahoma before 1911. The family lived in Salt Lake City for a short time prior to 1917 and William became ill and was treated with excessive amounts of Quinine, which resulted in deafness, and William was never able to speak. When he grew older he disappeared and was never seen again.

Clyde Russell Barker (Grandson) was born May 27, 1911 in Eaglesville, Modoc County, California and appears to have died as a small child.

Mae Barker (Granddaughter) was born in Oklahoma on April 14, 1914 and married Frank Young in 1933 in Butte, Montana. They had one Daughter and two sons. After 23 years of marriage they were separated and her husband in a domestic dispute killed Mae. On October 5, 1956 Mae was living with her daughter in Phillipsburg, Montana when her husband Frank Young came to the residence to ask her to go back with him. When she refused he pulled a .32 caliber automatic pistol and shot her three times killing her then shot their daughter once in the arm then turned the gun and shot himself in the head. Double funeral services were held the following Tuesday. The daughter survived.

Mary Barker (Granddaughter) was born in 1916 and nothing is known of her.

Donald Barker (Grandson) was born in Butte Montana on July 4, 1916 and died in Sacramento, California on December 28, 2000.

Della Barker (Granddaughter) was born on September 29, 1920 In Butte, Montana Her husband's last name was Stevenson and she was last known to be living in Arizona.

Harold Barker (Grandson) was born in Butte, Montana on May 15, 1923 and died in Kirkland, Washington in August of 1977.
